Between 1930 and 1937, Koelz produced a huge anti-war Triptych (three-panel painting). Please click on a section of the Triptych to find out details of individual pieces.
"Thou Shalt Not Kill" measured 1.9 x 5.5 metres. Records show that Koelz was planning and making preliminary sketches for the work from 1924 onwards and the triptych itself was probably begun around 1930. His models were members of his family, friends and their children.
Correspondence from December 1934 indicates that it was almost finished and the existing black and white negative of the whole painting, dating from that year, shows that all but the lower half of the central panel and some detail towards the top of the others is complete. It is therefore safe to assume that at the time of its dismemberment in August 1937 it was almost a finished piece of work.
