The right and left panels of the triptych depict members of both German and French society, soldiers, old couples, women, children and churchmen.
Sean Rainbird believes that this remarkable work "casts light upon a period of great political upheaval in Germany, which affected the lives and livelihoods of many artists". "Great anti-war statements such as Otto Dix's 'The Trench', 1923 (now lost) are well known. Koelz's previously unknown triptych, painted a decade later, was conceived during a period of fanatical nationalism and increasing intolerance".
