The reconstruction of the triptych is based on research by Ava Farrington, Koelz's daughter, and Simon Lake, Leicester City Museums Service.
Visualisation of the missing French soldier added by Koelz after the photograph had been taken. Based on a sketch by Siegfried (Fred) Koelz drawn from memory after nearly 70 years. Visualisation by Simon Lake, Leicester City Museums, February 2001.
Only fragments of the huge picture survive. Luckily, photographs were taken when the triptych was nearly complete, so we know what he intended, and where the recovered fragments belong.
The main black and white photograph (which Koelz had printed as a postcard) has now been copied and re-printed full size. Onto this we have mounted the four original fragments donated to Leicester City Museums Service in their original positions, and the full-size colour copies of the other found fragments.
